Album

So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter is the second live album by singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco, released in 2002 see 2002 in music. The opening track of the second disc, Comes a Time, is an excerpt from the famous speech by Mario Savio, given before Free Speech Movement demonstrators entered Sproul Hall to begin their sit-in on December 3, 1964. His climactic words about the operation of the machine have been quoted widely ever since, out of context, as the existential emblem of the FSM. One imagines that Ani DiFranco and her fellow New Yorkers find a number of similar sentiments as their progressive folk show travels across small-town America. Despite such nativist impulses, DiFranco also finds a warm, responsive audience wherever she travels. Her first live album in five years, So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter documents the Righteous Babe in a number of settings, captured between September 2000 and April 2002. Ani DiFranco has become my favorite songwriter in a very short period of time, and this is her most recent live album. She is known for her more stripped live-performances, with just her in this album her backing band is Drums&Tuba, a jazz ensemble that is amazingly tight and perfectly fits Ani's unique musical style. Ani DiFranco is about as talented as they can guitar sound and vocal style are both amazing and unique, her lyrics are clever and brutally honest and she is an amazing all-round musician. But her best asset is her live-performance, which is far mor. Fourteenth street and the garbage swirls like a cyclone Three-o-clock in the afternoon And I am going home F-train is full of high school students So much shouting, so much laughter Last night's underwear In my back pocket Sure sign of the morning after. Take me home Take me home and leave me there Think I'm going to cry, don't know why Think I'm going to sing myself a lullaby Feel free to listen Feel free to stare. Though in retrospect a useful documentation of her since disbanded funk combo, So Much Shouting is a superfluous release that doesn't do much justice to Ani, her awesome band, or her deep catalog of songs. Ani justifies this and every live release with the reasoning that she has never been at home in the studio, despite releasing four consecutively praised albums in the prior five years.
