It premiered on 18 June 1821 at the Schauspielhaus Berlin. It is considered the first important German Romantic opera, though what exactly is German remains unclear. One of the most scornful critics of Weber, Ludwig Börne, remarked: In each German work the familiar must be found because it is the way of the Germans to combine. There's a tendency to treat Weber's opera Der Freischütz as though it's just a step away from Wagner, even though, at its 1821 premiere, Wagner was still two decades away. Conductor Tomás Netopil seems to have made a specialty of this work - he led a new production in Vienna in 2018, as well as this live performance at the Aalto Theater in Essen, Germany - and he resists the Wagnerite tendency. The resounding success of its premiere in 1821 practically made it a manifesto for German Romantic opera, one that would become a significant formative influence on Wagner. Although it has its roots in the Singspiel tradition exemplified by Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Der Freischütz cut new ground with its potent mixture of supernatural elements, dreams, folk melodies, evocations of nature, and symphonic tone painting. Weber, Carl Maria von: Der FreischützBrief excerpt from Agathe's cavatina Und ob die Wolke sie verhülle in Act III of Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz 1821 from a 1951 recording featuring soprano Traute Richter and Berlin's Städtische Oper Orchestra conducted by Artur Rother.
