Don Ellis Live at Montreux is a live album by trumpeterbandleader Don Ellis recorded in 1977 and released on the Atlantic label. Ellis' large orchestra four reeds, eight brass, one keyboard, two bassists, two drummers, two percussionists and a string quartet performs six of the leader's originals and, although none of the songs are all that memorable, there are many. This album, along with the live at Fillmore album are my two favorite Don Ellis albums, and two of my favorite all-time big band albums. The music on this album is not as wildly complex as Live in 3 23 4 time - at least, not on the surface listen for it, though - but it still rings out with challenges to the status quo. I have been a huge fan of Mangione's Feel So Good, and so was wonderfully surprised to find two versions of a song herein based on that melody line, with Ellis taking it into places way beyond what Mangione ever did
