Yet, the earliest references to the large viol violone show that it was used long before orchestras came into existence. Double Bass is a studio album by jazz bassists Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Sam Jones, which was recorded in 1976 and released on the Danish SteepleChase label. Pedersen's singing tone contrasts with the darker sound of Jones, though the players nimbly shift roles throughout the sessions. Ludwig Streicher June 26, 1920 - March 11, 2003 was a contrabassist from Vienna, Austria. Familiar to many as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's contrabass first chair and soloist, he is also known as a self-taught instructor and as the author of a popular contrabass textbook. Entering the Vienna Music Academy at the age of 14, Streicher graduated in 1940 and spent the next four years serving as contrabass first chair at the Kraków National Theater. In 1945 he joined the Vienna Philharmonic and spent 19 years 1954 - 1973 as its first chair. After 1966, Streicher devoted hi read more.
