Even when the tempo picks up, as it does on the title track, there's little of the dense, manic energy on Miles Smiles - this is about subtle shadings, even when the compositions are as memorable as Tony Williams' Pee Wee or Herbie Hancock's Sorcerer. Sorcerer, the third album by the second Miles Davis Quintet, is in a sense a transitional album, a quiet, subdued affair that rarely blows hot, choosing to explore cerebral tonal colorings. For any listener who has let “Sorcerer” pass them by in any way, or has only ever experienced the album in Stereo, let me tell you right now that this record is a dark romantic mini masterpiece in Mono, minus the add-on final track, which I never play. In Mono, “Sorcerer” sounds like a “Jazz Record”; stinging and searing cymbals crash all around you, the base is full and drops below you, while “the man with the horn” pricks your ear the way that he always seems to, but in Stereo, “Sorcerer” is reduced to “background music”...Let “Sorcerer” in Mono cast it’s spell...
