While personal epiphanies are repeatedly told by those who've been converted by Neurosis' sensory overloading live show as well as its recordings, there's a hypnotic quality to this album that takes hold fro. To write a review of Neurosis album is a daunting task. Their music is monolithic and takes multiple listens just to absorb the structures of the songs. Then you have to add in all of those creepy layers of keyboards and guitar squalls that truly flesh out the songs. Neurosis began to create this vision in 1985 and have only improved upon their sound with each preceding album. In this time period, Neurosis have also made long, expansive songs their weapon of choice, only further pushing themselves away from any type of commercial acceptance. Band Name Neurosis USA. Album Name Given to the Rising. Type Album. Released date 08 May 2007. Neurosis is a band that is in a constant state of evolution, with each album marking significant changes from the one before. From the folk inspired minimalism of A Sun That Never Sets, to the grainy industrial soundscapes of Through Silver in Blood to the hypnotic trance metal of Enemy of the Sun. All of this you probably already know so you may be questioning why I bring this up. I bring this up, dear readers, because Given to the Rising is the first album where the band has remained static. On these San Franciscan metallurgists' ninth album, Given To the Rising, Neurosis are simply not fucking around. Within the first note you know you're in for a ride: no staple slow-building intros or atmospheric effluvia, just a crushing primordial mid-tempo riff that eventually falls into one of the album's repeating motifs of bendy, long-hanging funereal guitar lines, all braced with plenty of back-to-basics pummeling.
