The Bairns was the second album by Rachel Unthank and the Winterset now the Unthanks, which then comprised Rachel Unthank, her younger sister Becky, pianist Belinda O'Hooley and fiddle player Niopha Keegan. Produced by Adrian McNally and released by Rabble Rouser on 20 August 2007, it was nominated for the Best Album award at the 2008 BBC Folk Awards and was also nominated for the 2008 Mercury Prize. It received a four-starred review in The Guardian. From the album 'The Bairns' EMI, 2007. Rachel Unthank And The Winterset. The Unthanks - Last Official video second album from Rachel Unthank & the Winterset, following the group's highly praised debut, is a record that demands several plays to understand. It starts off in uncompromising fashion, as the first verse of Felton Lonnin is in Northumbrian dialect so deep as to be virtually incomprehensible to an outsider and Unthank's wavering vocal isn't exactly embracing. The second album by Rachel Unthank & The Winterset and, as it turned out, the last before the reshuffle that created The Unthanks, this album saw the quartet really develop their own voice with hugely atmospheric arrangements tending to centre on multiple vocals and the piano playing of Belinda O'Hooley Niopha Keegan, incidentally, had replaced Jackie Oates in the fiddle slot. Rachel Unthank & The Winterset: Are an English folk group known for their eclectic approach in combining traditional English folk, particularly Northumbrian folk music, with other musical genres. Their debut album, Cruel Sister, was Mojo magazine's Folk Album of the Year in 2005. Their album Mount the Air, released in 2015, won in the best album category in the 2016 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. In 2017 they released two albums featuring the songs and poems of Molly Drake, mother of N. Rachel Unthank & The Winterset's Cruel Sister 2005 was an outstanding debut but its successor is on a different plane altogether: The Bairns inhabits some other dimension in which four young women channel the genius loci of England's North-East into a hauntingly uplifting aural experience. The band's unique sound revolves around Rachel and Becky Unthank's unaffected, richly regional voices but it's a true ensemble, with Niopha Keegan's fiddle soaring or weeping on demand and much of the power stemming from the absolute conviction of Belinda OHooley's d.
