Calling the Blue Chieftains the greatest country-blues-rock band that ever existed as some nameless soul does while introducing the band on this live disc might be going just a bit far to make a point, but anyone who's heard them knows that description isn't all that far off the mark. The Blue Chieftains were titans of the East Coast's roots rock scene, holding down a Sunday night residency at New York City's Continental Club that lasted several years and cutting a pair of well-loved singles for the Diesel Only label, but the band never scored an album deal an. The Blue Chieftains were a New York City-based alternative country band formed by Tim Carroll, the band's singer-songwriter and guitarist. The band's other members were Mark Horn drums, Stephen B. Antonakos slide guitar and vocals, and Scott Yoder bass. The band was active for five years before breaking up in 1993, during which time they played about 200 shows. The band never released a studio album of their own. Their studio contributions were limited to some tracks they contributed to three. Blue 's All. By John F. Published Apr 01, 2002. Back in the late '80s, the Blue Chieftains were major players in the nascent NYC alt-country scene. They gigged regularly but only released a pair of singles and a few compilation cuts. That's All was recorded in May 1997, at a one-off reunion gig at Coney Island High. They played roughly 50 tracks that night and 18 of them are crammed onto this 78-minute-plus CD. They combined country, rock and blues in a rough-hewn amalgamation. Many of the originals here have appeared in remade form on main writer and guitarist Tim Carroll's solo LPs, but it's the eclectic array of covers that defines them. I'm an absolute novice with folk music but the mixing of this Best of album sounds heavy on pipes and stings and less on bass and drums which is not how traditional music sounds live. Don't let that put you off getting it if you're like me and wanting to develop a folk music collection, there's great depth in this CD
