And although he and Thelonious Monk did mesh well together, and played beautifully on four of these LPs, they clashed personally. By around 1954, Miles wrote that hed hoped to form a steady touring band with Rollins, Horace Silver on piano, Kenny Clarke on drums, and Percy Heath on bass. Nor is it spelled out that Walkin the 12-inch version, released by Prestige in 1957 is a compilation of two of the 10-inch LPs-Miles Davis Quintet in addition to Miles Davis All Star Sextet-plus one song not on this set. It all gets a little eye-crossing. Track Listing - Disc 10. Denzil Best, Thelonious Monk. Miles Davis. feat: Miles Davis All-Stars. Thelonious Sphere Monk Rocky Mount, North Carolina 10th October 1917 - Hartsdale, New York 17th February 1982 was a jazz pianist and composer. Widely considered as one of the most important musicians in jazz he is one of only five jazz musicians to be featured on the cover of Time Monk had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including Epistrophy, 'Round Midnight, Blue Monk, Straight No Chaser and Well, You Needn't. The third LP in the Prestige 10-inch set, Thelonious Monk Quintet Prestige didn't seem interested in spending a lot of time on album titles, apparently, was recorded in 1954 and features a lot more personnel shifts: Blakey is back behind the drum kit, Frank Foster replaces Rollins on tenor sax, Curly Russell plays bass, and Ray Copeland introduces the. trumpet to the Monk Prestige sound. Here the arrangements are even fuller, as the trumpetsax soloing between Copeland and Foster best represented on the Monk original We See - create a playful back-and-forth. But Monk. This is a nice set depending on the price being asked. The music is great, and I would rate the sound/pressing quality of this set as on par with your average OJC pressing. So while these sound pretty darn good, these discs are not audiophile quality. These are early recordings from before stereo and so are mono recordings. The box is nice, and the sleeves do a good job of recreating the original sleeves of the era. The booklet is a little slim, but I can’t comment on it otherwise as I often don’t read the books with boxed sets like this. Inner sleeves are basic paper sleeves, not poly or poly-lined. Hope this is helpful info to someone.

Thought I read somewhere that this box set was mono. Perhaps I am mistaken. Anyone want to weigh in?

Kupidon
Thank you for this info. I guess I'll play them under my mono cartridge then!

Malann
Indeed it is. The recordings are in mono as stereo was not yet in use. There are no stereo issues of this material.

I have no basis for comparison--that is, I haven't heard the OJC releases--but I think the sound quality for this set is pretty crisp and as good as one could expect. I'm digging it. (FYI: there are currently 2 reviews on Amazon, and they differ.)

Flarik
Seem to be three reviews now - 2 at 5* one at 3* (bad pressing). Seems the 3* reviewer got a bad copy because they've asked for a replacement. Am buying because I want the music and know I will regret not buying it later this year when it disappears from stock.

Ce
How does this sound? Been looking to pick these albums up either with this release or on the 80s OJC releases.

Daigami
Yeah the music is fantastic! I’m just wondering if anyone can comment on the sound quality for this set?

These 22 songs are what compise Thelonious' first 3 LP's (on Prestige) preceded only by his 1st 2 LP's, which were on Blue Note. It's fantastic music, great early Thelonious!
