Monk's Blues is an album by Thelonious Monk accompanied by a big band arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson. Originally released by Columbia Records in 1968, it was re-released on CD in 1994. Produced by Teo Macero, the album was recorded in Los Angeles by Monk's working quartet augmented by a group of Hollywood studio musicians. Side One. Let's Cool One - 3:47. Reflections - 4:35. Rootie Tootie - 7:35. Just a Glance at Love Teo Macero - 2:52. Although nostalgia has allowed Monk's Blues to age more gracefully than perhaps the recording deserves, it remains an unfortunate fact that Thelonious Sphere Monk's final studio sessions were very poorly conceived. The idea of Monk performing with a big band was inspired nobly enough by the February '59 NYC Town Hall performance which was issued as Thelonious Monk Orchestra at Town Hall. These studio recordings fall far short of that classic live encounter. However there are a few brief moments of inspiration that are not overcome by random blasts from an over driven hollow soun. He had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including 'Round Midnight, Blue Monk, Straight, No Chaser, Ruby, My Dear, In Walked Bud, and Well, You Needn't. Monk is the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington, which is particularly remarkable as Ellington composed more than a thousand pieces, whereas. Monk's Blues' was panned by the critics when it was originally issued in 1969 and although some of Oliver Nelson's arrangements are not ideal for Monk there's much to enjoy on this album. Highlights of the eleven tracks include 'Straight No Chaser' with exuberant solos from Monk & Rouse and an impressive solo piano version of ''Round Midnight'. Probably the least known of all Monk's albums 'Monk's Blues' is nowhere near as bad as the critics made out and deserves to be heard. Read more. 2 people found this helpful. Monk's Blues.
